Leviathan Wakes is a novel that can’t seem to decide if it wants to be a gritty, neo-noir crime story or a sweeping sci-fi epic—it is trying very hard to be both。 And while I enjoyed it, there were moments where it felt disjointed, as if it were two stories written by two authors that were smashed together, existing apart from but along side one another, shaping and being shaped by each other’s narrative frames of reference。 And as it turns out, James S。A。 Corey is the pen name for a pair of wri Leviathan Wakes is a novel that can’t seem to decide if it wants to be a gritty, neo-noir crime story or a sweeping sci-fi epic—it is trying very hard to be both。 And while I enjoyed it, there were moments where it felt disjointed, as if it were two stories written by two authors that were smashed together, existing apart from but along side one another, shaping and being shaped by each other’s narrative frames of reference。 And as it turns out, James S。A。 Corey is the pen name for a pair of writing partners。 In my estimation, this book absolutely reads like it’s the product of writing by committee。 The seams show。 Yet, I can absolutely see how this world would translate to the screen。 The novel does a tremendous job creating imagery in the reader’s mind。 In fact, I read this because I wanted to see The Expanse televisions show and felt I should read the source material first。 Now? I’m not so sure that’s necessary。 But the story is cinematic and frequently engaging (though with periods where it’s easy to simply disconnect)。 The characters are mostly well-developed, though we don’t seem to see as much difference between peoples/cultures as we are told we should。 The novel continually tries to ramp up the tension, but the frequency of things just exploding (literally and figuratively) around the characters starts to take on a “just another day at the office” feel that I felt the novel couldn’t escape。 Almost made me root for Eros Station。Overall, I liked it well enough, so I will eventually read Caliban’s War just to see where things go。 But I’m not sure this entry into the series lives up to the hype。 Maybe I’ll do a reread after reading Caliban’s War and watching some of The Expanse—I feel like the full experience of this novel might be improved be engaging in the series and television show a little more。 However, with no additional context, this is not necessarily a must read in my opinion。 Though it is good enough to keep me interested in the checking out more。 If it seems cool to you, it’s a pretty good read that could open you up to a series that many love。 I’ve got my toe in the water, and it’s nice enough to wade a little further。 。。。more

I'd been hearing about the wonder that is Leviathan Wakes, and I hadn't read much science fiction for a while, and the library has it as an ebook, so I checked it out and settled in for a good read。And realized why I haven't read much science fiction for a while。 Long conversations about the technicalities of empire-building or running the ship or whatever isn't something a normal human being would discuss; long sections describing every action taken by the character; long infodumps as character I'd been hearing about the wonder that is Leviathan Wakes, and I hadn't read much science fiction for a while, and the library has it as an ebook, so I checked it out and settled in for a good read。And realized why I haven't read much science fiction for a while。 Long conversations about the technicalities of empire-building or running the ship or whatever isn't something a normal human being would discuss; long sections describing every action taken by the character; long infodumps as characters think through every unfascinating permutation of whatever they're doing; characters who that are stale, stale stereotypes instead of people。 Miller。 Oh, good grief, Miller。 I'm sure there are police officers who aren't drunks with hearts of gold, but they sure don't seem to show up anywhere。 The Miller chapters I started to skim first。The bits of everyday life on (in?) the asteroid were good, and the sense that the universe is not an especially safe place。 The droning monotony of really uninspired text was not good, nor were the wafer-thin characterizations。 (I'm reminded of Pauline Kael's description of characters being cardboard cutouts carrying pieces of the plot around--see her review of Raiders of the Lost Ark。)And has the author ever met a female-type person? because there was no sense of real people there, either。 (No surprise。) At one point just before I bailed, teenaged girls are looking on admiringly while teenaged boys repeat the rebellious yikyak they've been hearing; and, honestly Corey, as a used-to-be teenaged girl, I can tell you we would have been the ones spouting the rhetoric。Also, wow, does this book give off 50s vibes that no one exists in the universe but cis heterosexuals。 Actually, the whole book seems to be built on a stereotypical representation of the 1950s, with a layer of "oh, yeah, women can be space pilots and cynical cops, too, because the author is so progressive"; but the main thing is that Holden wants to fuck his crew member and Miller wants to rescue his target, because those are apparently the only ways Corey can come up with for men and women to relate to each other。 Oh, and the emasculating female boss shows up, of course。Bleh。 After a while I was picking up the book in a sense of duty instead of anticipation, so I skimmed through a few 1-star reviews here and thought, "Are you kidding?" and did a search of the book, and, no, they weren't。So, farewell book; life's too short。 。。。more

Honestly, I read this book because the TV serial was so highly recommended。 I'm backwards like that, but the book is often better than the book。 So here I am, 1000+ page into the 'The Expanse'。 I'm not mad about that; quite the opposite, actually。 Leviathan Wakes is kind of a pleasant surprise。 There's enough plausible future technology, world building and politics jammed into the first act of the book that you can kind of pretend that this is going to be a pretty average (well written) spec fic Honestly, I read this book because the TV serial was so highly recommended。 I'm backwards like that, but the book is often better than the book。 So here I am, 1000+ page into the 'The Expanse'。 I'm not mad about that; quite the opposite, actually。 Leviathan Wakes is kind of a pleasant surprise。 There's enough plausible future technology, world building and politics jammed into the first act of the book that you can kind of pretend that this is going to be a pretty average (well written) spec fiction political thriller。 All of that is despite the prologue where the reader should be cluing into the fact that there's something else going on here。 It's a great trick that Corey pulls, and I won't ruin it in this review。 You're going to have to trust me on this one。The story is set in a world where humanity has made the plunge into the solar system, colonizing Mars properly as well as making it out into the 'Belts', asteroid belts, for fun and profit。 Mostly profit。 The core of the story is built around the political tensions between earth, mars and the belts - most often the planets against the belts。 A lot of time is spent on building the persona of a belter and how they differ fundamentally from humans born in real gravity。 The technology is well researched, plausible and realistic。 I feel I know more about how artificial gravity works now than ever before (not that I gave it a ton of thought)。 There's a great sense of consistency throughout that I really appreciated。Told from two points of view, a hard boiled cop on a station and the second in command of a water hauling star ship。 Both of these men are pretty well set in each of their ways, there isn't a lot in the way of development from beginning to the end, but you do see their value tested at every turn and the reader really has a feeling that these two characters are doing the best they can with the hand that they're dealt。 Bother become unwitting pawns in a system wide political scheme for power, mad power and the future of the entire human race。 The action is tight and the story is BIG, BIG enough to justify the page count and then some。 Slow burn thriller with an almost noir hint at times sprinkled with excellent action sequences。 The dog fighting sequences, I thought, were particularly well done。 I'm reading over this review and realize I didn't add in any details。 I think that's alright - I'm just going to say - I recommend this book。 It's got some great spec fiction elements, explores some heavy topics on what it means to be human and handles the largest of stakes - the fate of an entire race while keeping the stories personal to a fairly small cast of characters。 。。。more

There's way too much shit you could be doing right now。 Think of how many times you've sat down to read a book, or watch a show, or play a game and think, "Well, I'm not really into this, I'll just go do something else instead"。 That's completely fair too, with all the good content being put out and blasted at you, how could you possibly tell what's worth your time? Leviathan Wakes never left me any room to think, "I could be watching Adventure Time or playing Monster Hunter"。 It had me thinking There's way too much shit you could be doing right now。 Think of how many times you've sat down to read a book, or watch a show, or play a game and think, "Well, I'm not really into this, I'll just go do something else instead"。 That's completely fair too, with all the good content being put out and blasted at you, how could you possibly tell what's worth your time? Leviathan Wakes never left me any room to think, "I could be watching Adventure Time or playing Monster Hunter"。 It had me thinking, "What in the ever living fuck is going to happen next?" From beginning to end, this book is an absolutely wild ride。 The story changes dramatically over 500 pages and not once, barring the ending, does it seem implausible。 The story is filled with political intrigue, horror, space fights, etc。 I'd say that 85% of this book is perfect。 The sci-fi jargon is easy to grasp (except when someone goes full Belter), the world-building is exceptional, and it's twists are incredibly well-done。 Along with the bulk of the story, the supporting cast of this book is what makes it so enjoyable。 So many of the side characters are memorable; even if I wasn't planning on reading the sequels, I'd remember characters like Amos, Naomi, Fred。 In fact, the crew of the Rocinante have the toughest job in the whole book, which is helping make the Holden POVs bearable。 Holden is my biggest issue with the book。 He's one of the two character POVs we're given, and while I don't want to completely rag on the guy, he's absolutely fucking insufferable。 He's a standard self insert character, which is a staple for genres like sic-fi and fantasy。 He's a racially ambiguous (white) MC who was in the Earth Space Navy。 That's all the characterization you're going to get from HIM。 In fact, you're not going to notice that he's a bad character until midway through the book, though the signs appear pretty early on。 The one moment that really struck me as genuine for Holden was when he was talking about why he was rightfully discharged from the military。 He tries punching his commanding officer, misses, and hits a wall, damaging his own hand。 When he recounts that story to another character he says something along the lines of, "It was just my luck that I ended up missing and hurting the right guy。" That shows introspection, that shows willingness to admit his own faults, that kind of stuff leads to well-rounded and compelling characters! That's also the last time we get anything like that from him! Holden is a paragon for the rest of the story。 In fact, other characters won't shut up about how "righteous" Holden is。 It's good for your character to follow some sort of ideology, but you also have to be responsible for challenging that ideology。 If you don't do that, your character becomes a broken record of lip service。 "That's bad and we don't do bad stuff!" type shit。 The book goes as far as to set up conflicting ideologies and adversities, but he manages to weasel his way out of everything, INCLUDING CHARACTER GROWTH! The other POV, Miller, literally poses a classic "Chaos vs。 Order" ideological conflict and Holden just goes, "No, I don't wanna talk about it :(((。" Making your character go through difficulty after difficulty doesn't make them a good character。 Having your character get hurt physically isn't really growth。 It's how they react and grow from that adversity, how they're changed by it, that form a compelling and layered character。 So you have 400 pages worth of a grown man complaining about shit all the time, and the book demands you continue to take him seriously, as his decisions end up getting more and more people killed。 Speaking of other people, they absolutely cannot shut the fuck up about Holden for even a second。 There is so much telling in this book about who Holden is。 People call him righteous, people call him handsome and perfect all the time! A character literally tells Holden that every woman who was on the ship with him wanted to sleep with him。 People just can't seem to stop sucking his dick throughout the story, or falling to their knees in front of him, or swooning over him。 Things just happen to keep working out for him。 Everything he does is shown to be in a just or positive light。 If the supporting cast and story weren't as good, Holden wouldn't have a leg to stand on。 He'd be yet another throwaway Gary Stu sci-fi protagonist。 I have two more minor issues with the book。 But they're both MASSIVE SPOILERS so read at your own risk。 (view spoiler)[This book plays the tired trope of "Character who's clearly suffering from PTSD, disassociation, and suicidal tendencies, sacrifices themselves in the end and dies a hero。" Was that a choice? I mean, did the character choose that? Or did you purposefully not give the character any other choice? This happens a lot in media, where a character is shown to have mental health issues, but also isn't so much as imbedded into the world as they're written into it because that "type" of character is needed so they can be killed off eventually。 The character hits rock bottom, and then plans to commit suicide, but alas, there's hope! For they can magically fix the plot and still kill themselves in the process, thus becoming a martyr! You're a fucking dunce if you think that's good character writing/arc resolution。 Lastly, the ending was a mess。 After a lot of good and reasonably telegraphed twists, like everything that took place earlier on Eros, the ending kind of just。。。 Happens? Things just happen and they don't really happen well? The twist is super weak, and while you could say it subverted my expectations, so would getting hit by a train in the ocean。 The issues get Deus Ex'd away for the most part and leave a hint of what you might be seeing in the sequel。 Everything gets resolved too quickly and too nicely。 (hide spoiler)]Overall, this book was an incredible experience。 I'm a little pissed I've come to it so late in the game and I'm probably going to start devouring book 2 later this week! Check this one out, it's 1000% worth your time。 4。5/5。 James Holden Caulfield O_0, Catcher in the Sky。。??? 。。。more

Set in the somewhat near future, the politics of the solar system have evolved into three groups, Earth, Mars and the Belters。 The story follow a policeman from Ceres and an spaceship officer from Earth as they become involved in solar system politics that turn into war。 The two work together to find the source of the conflict bring it to a surprising resolution。

By the end of this, I was onboard with it enough that I'll probably still continue reading the series (and I'll definitely check out the TV adaptation), but large chunks of this just did not work for me at all。Miller creeped me out, and I found his parts to be pretty boring until he met up with the others。 I feel like I would have enjoyed this more if his parts were cut out and we just got a more reasonable-length story from Holden's POV。 By the end of this, I was onboard with it enough that I'll probably still continue reading the series (and I'll definitely check out the TV adaptation), but large chunks of this just did not work for me at all。Miller creeped me out, and I found his parts to be pretty boring until he met up with the others。 I feel like I would have enjoyed this more if his parts were cut out and we just got a more reasonable-length story from Holden's POV。 。。。more

A riveting science fiction epic, never failing to leave you with your jaw hanging open as Corey reveals the next big twist。 A political drama and a deftly interwoven mystery all spun inside a future that feels both out of this world, and also extremely plausible in its honesty and grit。 The characters come to life off the page, and Corey manages to guide them all right into position without it seeming contrived or convenient, and making the answers to your questions feel earned。
